The Last of Us Online took most of Naughty Dog's staff before its cancellation

Jason Schreier reports most of the studio worked on the cancelled multiplayer game through the 2020s, delaying Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Work on The Last of Us Online occupied the majority of Naughty Dog's staff before the multiplayer project was cancelled, according to reporting from Jason Schreier relayed by MassivelyOP. The account reframes the studio's unusually long gap between releases as a consequence of that commitment rather than an unexplained pause.

Naughty Dog cancelled the standalone online game, which was set in the same fungal-zombie world as The Last of Us, after concluding that its scope and ambition would draw resources away from the studio’s next project. What was not clear at the time was how much of the studio had already been committed to building it.

Schreier’s reporting indicates the online game was not a side project. The majority of developers at Naughty Dog were focused on completing The Last of Us Online rather than the single-player title Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and that work took up the bulk of the studio’s time through the 2020s. Staff were not directed toward Intergalactic until after the multiplayer game was scrapped.

The sequence matters because it inverts the assumption that a live-service spin-off runs alongside a studio’s main project. On this account the single-player game waited on the multiplayer one, rather than the other way around, and the cost of the cancellation was paid in time that had already been spent.

A wider gap than one cancelled game

MassivelyOP draws the same line to the remasters Naughty Dog had planned for its other games, which have yet to materialise. The outlet describes the episode as a misstep by the studio and, by extension, by Sony in its pursuit of games as a service.

It places the cancellation alongside two other outcomes of that push: Destiny 2 moving into maintenance mode, and the change of direction for the multiplayer RPG Horizon Hunters Gathering. Taken together, the outlet argues, they mark a pattern rather than an isolated decision.

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet remains the studio’s upcoming single-player release. No revised timeline for it was given in the reporting.
