CD Projekt Red will give the first proper look at The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past during Gamescom's Opening Night Live on August 25. The studio confirmed the appearance in a post on X, telling players to expect a glimpse of the expansion during the show, which begins at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 8pm CEST.
Songs of the Past was announced in May 2026, timed to the tenth anniversary of Blood and Wine, the last expansion the 2015 game received. It is being developed by CD Projekt Red alongside Fool's Theory, the studio also handling the remake of the first Witcher, and is headed for PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X in 2027.
A full-scale expansion, not a prologue
Concrete detail has been scarce since the announcement, but CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski has given investors a sense of the scope. He compared it to Blood and Wine, an expansion that takes most players between 25 and 40 hours.
It really depends on how you're going to play, what's your playthrough. But we're definitely making a proper big expansion, is the message I would send out there.
Nowakowski has characterised Songs of the Past as a reminder of the franchise rather than a direct lead-in to The Witcher 4, which still has no firm release window. The expansion follows Geralt of Rivia rather than Ciri, who takes over as protagonist in the next game. It was originally targeted for 2026 and pushed to 2027, in Nowakowski's framing, to reach the best possible result for players.
He has also suggested Songs of the Past is not the only Witcher 3 content in the pipeline, describing other material at an advanced stage of production that is smaller in scale than the expansion and planned for release this year. Nothing further about that content has been announced.
The commercial logic behind revisiting a decade-old game is straightforward: Polygon notes The Witcher 3 has sold more than 65 million copies, placing it among the ten best-selling games ever made.
