Ryan Lastimosa, one of the founding members of Respawn Entertainment, has returned to the studio as Franchise Art Director and is working on Apex Legends again, Dot Esports reports.
Lastimosa first joined Respawn during its start-up period as a senior 3D artist, where he helped define the visual identity of Titanfall. Over twelve years at the company he was promoted to creative director, directing the 3D art of Apex Legends and of other single-player projects then in development. He left the studio in early 2023.
What the return could mean for Apex
Apex Legends is set in the Titanfall universe, and Dot Esports argues the game's look has drifted a long way from that grounded science-fiction starting point across thirty seasons of live service. The outlet points to the Prestige Skins as the clearest measure: early releases for Bangalore and Bloodhound sat close to the Titanfall aesthetic, while later ones such as Wattson's lean into bright, saturated colour and armour designs that read very differently.
Dot Esports frames a return to that earlier, grittier style as a likely consequence of the appointment. That remains the outlet's expectation rather than a stated plan: Respawn has announced no art direction change tied to the hire, and as Dot Esports itself acknowledges, a change in development staff does not always mean a significant change to the game.
What is confirmed is the role itself. Lastimosa returns after a break of more than three years, to a franchise whose art he helped establish, in a position that spans it rather than a single season of content. Apex Legends has changed considerably since launch day, and a franchise-level art brief is the kind of remit that could touch that across the board rather than in one update.
Respawn has not published a statement setting out Lastimosa's priorities, and no timeline has been attached to the appointment.
