Total War: Warhammer 40,000 won best PC game at this year's Gamescom awards, PC Gamer reports. The strategy game has not been released.
It was one of three awards Sega took home from the show. The publisher also won best audio for Alien: Isolation 2 and best lineup for its slate as a whole.
According to Gamescom's own website, the award winners are chosen "by both an expert jury of gaming professionals and the community".
A long-requested adaptation
The game takes Total War's Warhammer line out of the fantasy world it has occupied since the first Total War: Warhammer, a game PC Gamer ranks among the best strategy games on PC, and into the wargame's science-fiction counterpart. Space Marines are in a Total War game for the first time, a step PC Gamer notes players have been vocally pushing for ever since the series first embraced Warhammer.
PC Gamer's Fraser Brown, who has played it, wrote that an hour was enough to make the game the highlight of his year.
It's immediately obvious how special Total War 40k is—I don't think a tutorial has ever made me giddy before.
PC Gamer's case for the fit is scale: a game where a single Ultramarine can be watched hacking an ork to bits up close, then the view pulled out to a wide shot of the whole battle. Warhammer thrives on extremes, the site wrote, and Total War's combination of scale and gruesome, exacting detail looks a particularly good match for it. Whether that pans out into a good game once it releases, it added, will have to wait.
