Two Retailers Say They Won't Stock GTA 6 Over Its Disc-Free 'Physical' Edition

Grand Theft Auto 6's physical release isn't shaping up the way longtime collectors hoped, and it's already costing Rockstar Games some shelf space. Two independent retailers have said they will refuse to carry the boxed version of the game once details emerged that it won't include an actual disc.

No Disc, No Deal

Rockstar's approach to a "physical" release for GTA 6 swaps out a traditional game disc for a printed download code tucked inside the box. That distinction has frustrated a vocal segment of players who see physical media as a hedge against delisted or unplayable games down the line, and it's now prompted pushback from stores that built their identity around selling tangible copies.

Retailers Draw a Line

Video Games Plus, a Toronto-area retailer that's been operating since 1990 — first through eBay, later through its own storefront and a single physical location in Ontario — confirmed it won't be selling GTA 6 under this format. The company says it has a standing policy against stocking games that amount to nothing more than a digital code, though it was careful to note the decision has nothing to do with the quality of the game itself, praising Rockstar Games directly and saying it would happily sell a disc-based version if one materializes. Delaware's Loot Box Gaming took a similar stance, though with a bit more finality in its wording. The online retailer, which also got its start on eBay and has plans to open a brick-and-mortar shop, said it's still waiting on more information from Rockstar but won't sell the code-in-a-box edition if that's ultimately what ships. In a statement, the retailer put it bluntly: "If a product can't honor the people who pay their hard-earned money to purchase it, then we have no business trying to sell it."

Preservation Concerns Drive the Pushback

Both retailers framed their refusal around game preservation — the idea that physical copies should function independently of servers, storefronts, or platform holders staying online indefinitely. A code in a box, critics argue, doesn't offer that same guarantee, since it still depends on a digital storefront to redeem and download.

Limited Impact, For Now

Realistically, neither VGP nor Loot Box Gaming carries the kind of scale that would meaningfully dent GTA 6's launch numbers. Both are considerably smaller than big-box retailers like Target and Walmart, which remain the dominant physical outlets for major releases. GameStop, one of the largest dedicated games retailers, hasn't issued any public comment on whether it will stock the game or under what terms. Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently set to launch on November 19 with a single-player campaign as its headline offering, and Rockstar has yet to detail what its online component will look like. Whether more retailers join VGP and Loot Box Gaming in rejecting the disc-free physical edition may depend on how Rockstar responds — or whether it responds at all — in the months before launch.
