Ubisoft has responded directly to negative Steam reviews of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, telling players that the remake's standard edition contains the entire game and that its day-one add-ons are optional.
The remake launched with a set of purchasable extras already listed on its Steam page, a practice that drew thumbs-down reviews within days of release. Rock Paper Shotgun counted nine separate packs at the time of writing, the majority of them cosmetic: gear sets for protagonist Edward Kenway and matching decoration for his ship, the Jackdaw. A further pack marks the locations of the game's collectables on the map.
Rather than let the reviews stand, Ubisoft posted a reply to them.
We've seen your feedback since launch, and we're reading all of it. We want to be clear on one point: the standard edition is the full, complete experience. Every mission, every island, the full story and the complete world are all there, with nothing held back. The additional packs are entirely optional extras for players who want them, never a requirement to enjoy or complete the game.
What the packs actually contain
Rock Paper Shotgun's reporter, who played a publisher-supplied deluxe edition for the outlet's review, said the extra content made no meaningful difference to a playthrough and that they ignored the included Master Assassin gear in favour of the base game's outfits. The outlet added that the complaint it found more understandable was from players who had already paid for a higher-priced edition and still found further gear sets behind a paywall.
The exchange is a familiar one for Ubisoft, which has shipped day-one cosmetic and convenience packs alongside recent Assassin's Creed releases. Responding to individual store reviews is less common, and the publisher closed its message by saying it would keep listening as players work through the game.
Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is a remake of the 2013 pirate-era entry in the series. Ubisoft has not indicated that it plans to change the edition line-up or fold any of the packs into the standard version.
