The UK's Health and Safety Executive has found that the production of Tomb Raider, the television series made by Amazon MGM, breached British safety law at Shinfield Studios, Eurogamer reported on September 2.
The ruling, obtained by Deadline, concluded that the production breached the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of 2002. At issue were the protections given to crew members handling certain substances.
According to the HSE, the crew did not undergo the biological monitoring required when spraying isocyanate paints, which are a leading cause of asthma. The regulator's guidance requires protective equipment for that work. The paints produce what the report describes as an "invisible mist" that can take up to 20 minutes to clear, and it is the employer's responsibility to establish the clearance time for the space in which the substance is being sprayed.
The HSE issued the production an "improvement notice" in April. The production responded within a month and rectified the issue, Eurogamer reported. Deadline noted that such notices are not typically issued against television productions, and Eurogamer wrote that Tomb Raider is apparently the highest-profile production to have received one in the last four years.
It is not the first disruption the production has faced. In March, series star Sophie Turner suffered an injury that forced the production to pause, with filming reportedly resuming two weeks later once she had recovered. The two matters do not appear to be linked.
The series is created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose credits include Fleabag and Killing Eve. Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs and Keeley Hawes, the original voice of Lara Croft in the games, have been confirmed for the cast. Filming began in January, and the show does not yet have a release date.
