Valve hotfixes Dota 2 Meepo item duplication exploit

Meepo was pulled from the hero pool on July 28 after players found a way to duplicate combinable items and generate near-unlimited gold.

Valve released a Dota 2 hotfix on July 28 addressing a Meepo exploit that let players duplicate items and generate effectively unlimited gold during a match. Meepo was pulled from the hero pool while the fix was prepared, blocking both manual selection and random assignment.

According to player reports, the exploit turned on how Meepo interacts with items, the courier, the stash and the automatic item-combination system. Rather than buying every base component legitimately, a player could produce duplicate copies of combinable items and sell them repeatedly. Reports described Meepo filling a six-slot inventory within the opening minutes of a match.

A video shared by Reddit user u/Bombad1ll demonstrated one route through it, using Iron Branches to occupy inventory slots, locking a Sange to stop it combining, and moving a Yasha to the courier and then the stash across a death and respawn. The result left both components uncombined and, once Meepo respawned, duplicable. Players said other combinable items could trigger the same behaviour.

Not the first Meepo exploit this year

Valve struck through the hero-removal notice after a follow-up update the same day confirmed the duplication bug was fixed, and Meepo has since returned to matchmaking. The company has not said whether accounts that deliberately used the exploit will face bans, matchmaking restrictions or other penalties.

It is the third round of Meepo fixes in 2026. Gameplay patch 7.41a, released on March 27, closed exploits that could crash servers using two Armlets of Mordiggian or a pair of Observer or Sentry Wards, along with issues around multiple Hands of Midas and duplicate copies of the same item. Four days later, another update fixed the duplication of Dusts of Appearance and of stackable, non-shareable items, plus interactions involving Divine Rapier, Radiance, Hand of Midas, Abyssal Blade and Disperser.

A separate issue filed on July 3 described a Town Portal Scroll bug in which using a scroll on a clone under particular swap conditions synchronised charge counts across scrolls held by the main hero.

The common thread is Meepo himself. Unlike most heroes he controls several permanent clones at once, which makes item ownership, cooldowns and combination rules unusually easy to break.
