Valve has quietly changed the way Counter-Strike 2 calculates bomb damage, replacing a system based on live proximity to the blast with a method built on simulation values computed ahead of time and stored directly in each map's compiled data. The shift affects how consistently players take damage from a planted bomb across the game's competitive map pool.
A Shift From Live Proximity to Precomputed Values
For years, CS2 determined bomb damage largely by measuring how close a player stood to the explosion when it went off. That approach has now been replaced. Damage figures are instead precomputed through simulation during map compilation and baked directly into each map file, meaning the radius a player must respect is now a fixed, exact formula rather than something calculated live in the moment the bomb detonates. Valve has not published the underlying formula, specific damage values, or an official date for when the change took effect, and no per-map numbers have been disclosed.
New Console Command Lets Players See the Blast Radius
Alongside the change, Valve introduced a console command, bake_bomb_damage_render_visualization, that lets players render a visual representation of the bomb's damage radius on whichever map they're standing in. Rather than relying on memory or guesswork about how far is far enough from a plant, players can now pull up an in-game visualization of the zone at risk. In practical terms, that gives players and coaches a way to identify safer standoff positions once the bomb has been planted, informing where to retreat, rotate, or hold an angle without walking into a lethal zone. That kind of positional check was less reliable under the old proximity-based system, since real-time calculations could vary depending on exact footing rather than a fixed, known radius.
Survivability Varies Across the Active Duty Pool
The change touches all 11 maps in CS2's current Active Duty rotation, and early testing with the visualization tool shows that outcomes are not uniform from map to map. On some maps, survivability around a bomb plant has become noticeably more forgiving than before, with Nuke standing out as the map that benefits the most. Other maps remain considerably less forgiving: Inferno in particular is described as a difficult map to survive a plant near, even with the new visualization available. Valve has not explained why the maps produce different results, and no technical rationale for the map-to-map variation has been offered. The net effect is a bomb damage system that is more predictable and transparent than before, even without a public explanation of the underlying calculations. With the visualization command in hand, players now have a concrete way to check survivability on the specific map they're playing, rather than relying on assumptions built under the old proximity-based model.
