Wardogs passes one million sales on day one as its servers buckle

Bulkhead's early access shooter peaked above 300,000 concurrent players on Steam, then went offline while login queues stretched past 300,000 people.

Wardogs, the 100-player military shooter from UK studio Bulkhead, sold more than one million copies on September 10, the day it entered Steam early access, the developer said. IGN, citing SteamDB, reported the game passed 300,000 concurrent players on launch day, and GameSpot said the $40 shooter was Steam's No. 1 best-seller.

To cross a million copies sold as we launch into early access is mental. We've spent the last few months showing people exactly what Wardogs is, what it isn't, and at one point literally gave everyone ten reasons not to buy it. We didn't want people buying into blind hype.

Destructoid reported the game passed 266,000 concurrent players within minutes of going live, at a $39.99 starting price, and GameSpot put the launch-day peak at 300,000 concurrent users on Steam. Eurogamer, which priced the game at £36.99 in the UK, reported it passed 350,000 concurrent players within hours of launching.

Queues, then an outage

Bulkhead put a server queue in place to handle the volume. GameSpot reported that players shared screenshots of their position in line, with some saying more than 300,000 people were ahead of them. Brammer said the queue itself was not "specifically broken", and attributed the wait to Wardogs being "rate limited" by Valve rather than treated at the tier larger releases receive. The studio said it was working with Valve to raise that limit.

PC Gamer reported that Bulkhead later took the servers offline entirely to work on a fix, with login attempts returning an error. "We are actively working towards getting as many of you in game as soon as possible. Apologies for the disruption," the Wardogs account posted on X, saying the problem "wasn't present in the previous beta". According to GameSpot, Bulkhead also cleared everyone out of the queue at one point, a decision the studio said was intended to get more players in faster.

Players separately reported being banned without apparent cause. GameSpot reported that Bulkhead said it was aware of the "incorrect bans" and was working to address them immediately. PCGamesN later reported that the erroneous bans caught streamers Michael "Shroud" Grzesiek and Jaryd "Summit1g" Lazar, who were broadcasting the game on Twitch, with Bulkhead blaming overactive anticheat combined with the sheer volume of simultaneous logins.

In a retrospective published by PCGamesN on September 12, Bulkhead said only about 10 of the intended 100 players per second were making it through the login gate, causing the queue to balloon. A hotfix that handed players a fresh Valve login ticket at the front of the line, followed by manually admitting waiting players in sets of 10,000, eventually cleared the queue. By September 12, PC Gamer reported, Wardogs had sold 1.25 million copies within its first 24 hours on sale.

What Wardogs is

Wardogs puts 100 players, split into three teams, on a single map set in a fictional version of Eastern Europe. It is available on PC only; Bulkhead confirmed alongside the early access launch that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are targeting 2028, without giving a date. PC Gamer noted that the final closed beta, held the weekend before launch, invited players to "obliterate our servers".

IGN reported that Bulkhead expects the launch attention to fade, and that the studio plans to take its time adding new content, which it said may mean drops in player counts.
