Warzone support on PS4 and Xbox One ends after Modern Warfare 4 season 1

Call of Duty: Warzone is leaving last-generation consoles. Activision will end support for the free-to-play battle royale on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One shortly after the launch of season 1 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Polygon reports, drawing on a post attributed to Call of Duty Staff.

Modern Warfare 4, this year's mainline Call of Duty release, launches October 23. Activision first signalled the Warzone cutoff alongside that game's announcement in May, and Polygon notes the decision is unlikely to surprise players on the older hardware: Modern Warfare 4 is skipping PS4 and Xbox One as well, and is bound instead for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.

Warzone itself continues on PlayStation 5, Windows PC and Xbox Series X. Beginning with Modern Warfare 4's first season, the battle royale will, in Activision's words, "integrate Modern Warfare 4 content and seasonal progression as part of a connected experience between both titles."

What last-gen players can still do

Warzone is no longer available as a new download on PS4 and Xbox One, so the cutoff applies to an existing install base rather than to new players. Those who already have the game can keep playing until Modern Warfare 4 season 1 arrives.

In the meantime, the Call of Duty team says players on the two older consoles will still be able to progress through free Battle Pass tiers, including unlocking new weapons across the remaining Black Ops 7 seasons. The in-game store on PS4 and Xbox One is being removed.

Warzone's second shutdown

Warzone launched in 2020 as a free-to-play battle royale set in the Call of Duty franchise, and that original version shut down in 2023 after its replacement, Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, launched the previous year. The 2022 release later dropped the "2.0" from its name and became, simply, Call of Duty: Warzone — the version now losing its last-generation platforms.
