Wolcen Studio announces Wolcen 2 for Steam early access in 2027

The French developer says the sequel is built in Unreal Engine 5, two years after it ended work on Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem and closed its online servers.

Wolcen Studio has announced Wolcen 2, a sequel to its action RPG Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, headed for Steam early access in 2027. The French developer made the announcement during Gamescom 2026, and MassivelyOP reported it on August 28.

The studio ended development on Lords of Mayhem and shut down its online servers in 2024, which had left the series looking finished. It has now posted both a formal announcement and a community FAQ for the sequel on Steam.

The studio said Wolcen 2 carries over the first game's dark fantasy setting, classless character building, co-op play for up to four players and loot. Players take the role of the son of the shadow god and unleash a Shadow Form to save reality in a world the studio describes as on the brink.

The developers addressed the state in which the first game ended, and the skepticism they expect from its players. They described the original Wolcen as commercially successful but built on a technical base that could not sustain long-term development without a complete rebuild. Wolcen 2 is being made in Unreal Engine 5, which the studio says will make long-term development more sustainable. The team also acknowledged that it had communicated poorly around the first game and said the sequel would be developed with community input, a commitment it labeled community-driven development.

Alpha testing is already running, with applications taken through the Wolcen Studio website. The studio said players of the original game will receive in-game rewards in the sequel, without specifying what those are. The early access launch is set for 2027.
