WoW patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, launches August 11 with new Lairs

World of Warcraft's next patch adds Lairs world-boss encounters, a new dungeon and raid, and home-decor features.

World of Warcraft's next major patch, 12.1: Curse of Ula'tek, is set to launch on Tuesday, August 11. The update takes players from the shores of Zul'Aman to a new zone called The Coiled Isle, and adds a mix of combat content and player housing features.

Lairs join the world-boss roster

One of the patch's central additions is Lairs, a new type of world-boss encounter that functions similarly to the game's existing Delves, complete with its own instance, a summoning stone, and difficulty that scales up to a flexible Mythic setting for groups of 15 to 25 players. Blizzard has not yet said how many Lairs will be available at launch. They arrive alongside a new dungeon, Altar of Fangs, the Venomous Abyss raid, three additional Delves, and a Nemesis Delve.

Curse of Ula'tek also expands player housing. Players will be able to bring their unlocked companion pets into their homes by placing a Pet Bed item, letting pets wander the space using what Blizzard describes as new navigation technology. The patch additionally adds the ability to export a completed house design or import one built by another player, whether for an entire home, a single room, or just its interior or exterior.

The patch continues World of Warcraft's ongoing campaign as well, following the character Arator as he deals with the fallout of the Voidspire storyline while players hunt for Xal'atath and the reappearing Twilight Blade.

A week after Curse of Ula'tek launches, on the weekly reset of Tuesday, August 18, Midnight Season 2 will begin. It adds the Altar of Fangs dungeon to Mythic+ rotation alongside Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, and Voidscar Arena, plus three returning dungeons: Kings' Rest, Ruby Lifepools, and Temple of Sethraliss. The update also introduces Bot Arenas, aimed at players who want to try PvP without facing other people directly, and adds new targets to hunt as part of the Astalor Bloodsworn Prey mechanic in The Coiled Isle.
