World of Warcraft patch 12.1 will let a guild link its in-game chat to a Discord channel, according to a Blizzard preview covered by Wowhead. Once the connection is made, messages sent in either place appear in the other.
Setting it up takes two steps. An individual player links their Discord account to World of Warcraft, and then a guild master or an officer with channel management permissions connects the guild to a server they administer. Only one channel can be connected per guild.
Messages arriving from Discord appear in-game marked with a purple Discord icon, and guild chat appearing in Discord is marked with a white controller icon. The connected Discord channel is labelled at the top to show it is tied to a World of Warcraft guild, with a disclaimer visible to everyone in it.
Limits on unlinked accounts
The integration draws a hard line at account linking, and Wowhead sets out what that means in practice.
- Messages from guild members who have not linked a Discord account do not appear in Discord.
- Discord users who have not linked their accounts can no longer send messages in the connected channel.
- Unlinked guild members can still read messages coming from Discord, and unlinked Discord users can still read the channel.
Because connecting a channel restricts who can post in it, Wowhead recommends creating a new Discord channel for the link rather than converting an existing busy one — particularly on larger servers, where not every member will want to link an account.
Guilds that would rather keep the two conversations apart have one further option. A setting separates Discord messages into a dedicated Guild Discord channel instead of the main guild chat. Wowhead notes that this channel does not currently accept messages typed into the normal chat window, though linked members can reach it through the guild interface.
Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, is scheduled for release on August 11.
