Y'shtola overtakes The Ur-Dragon as Magic: The Gathering's most-built Commander

EDHREC data puts the Final Fantasy 14 warlock on 49,813 decks, 425 days after the crossover set's prerelease.

The most popular Commander in Magic: The Gathering is now a Final Fantasy card. As of August 11, EDHREC data shows Y'shtola, Night's Blessed has passed The Ur-Dragon at the top of the format, Polygon reports.

EDHREC tracks popularity through the deck lists its users register, and confirmed the change in a blog post on Tuesday. Y'shtola has been legal for just shy of 15 months: prerelease for last year's Final Fantasy crossover set began on June 6, making it 425 days to the crown, with 49,813 decks registered to the site.

The card she displaced had only just arrived. Atraxa, Praetors' Voice had held the top spot since her release in 2016, and The Ur-Dragon took it from her less than a week before Y'shtola landed, boosted by the dragon-heavy 2025 set Tarkir: Dragonstorm.

Why she stuck

Most commanders spike on release and then fade as players move on to the next set. EDHREC's own breakdown noted that never happened with Y'shtola, and Polygon puts that down to two things: availability and flexibility.

On availability, Y'shtola is the face of one of Final Fantasy's four preconstructed Commander decks, the Scions & Spellcraft list, which can still be found at or below its $69.99 MSRP. Single copies of the card run between $1 and $4 on TCGplayer. The other three most popular commanders on EDHREC each cost more than $20 as singles.

What the card does

Y'shtola, Night's Blessed is a four-mana 2/4 with vigilance, costing one generic, one white, one blue and one black. If a player loses four or more life on any turn, her controller draws a card; every noncreature spell cast for three or more mana pings each opponent for two damage and gains her controller two life.

In a four-player game the second ability can trigger several times a turn cycle, bundling card draw, reach and lifegain into a single permanent. Because it keys off noncreature spells - instants, sorceries, enchantments, artifacts and planeswalkers alike - it does not push players toward one archetype the way The Ur-Dragon pushes dragons or Edgar Markov, the third most popular commander, pushes vampires. Spellslinger, artifacts, enchantments, control, lifegain and reanimator builds all work.
