Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick has declined to rule out a disc release for Grand Theft Auto VI, while arguing that discs make little sense for buyers of big games. His comments came in an interview with IGN, reported by GameSpot.
As things stand, GTA 6 is not shipping on a disc. It will be sold at retailers as a code in a box, which keeps the game on shop shelves without any physical media in the case. Asked whether Take-Two might ever put the game on a disc after that, Zelnick declined to close off the option.
I wouldn't rule out anything at this stage of the game. What we've announced so far is what we're doing at the moment, but we are always open minded.
His case for digital rests on where sales already are. More than 90 percent of Take-Two's sales are digital, Zelnick said, and players need to be connected to play most games today.
So everyone's connected. So it's just a matter of the most efficient way to get the title into people's hands.
Zelnick said he does not foresee any negative financial impact from releasing GTA 6 digitally, and expects the approach to make the publisher more money rather than less. He also expects the industry to move closer to near-universal adoption of digital over discs, while a small niche market for physical games persists in the way vinyl has in music.
He added that going digital-only was what was right for this game specifically, and was not a reaction to Sony's announcement that it will end support for physical game discs in January 2028.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game costs $80, a price Take-Two has defended as fair for what is being offered. Nothing in Zelnick's answer changes that plan for launch day; a disc, if one ever appears, would come later and has not been announced.
