rain steps back from in-game leading at 100 Thieves after six months in the role

The Norwegian says the team wanted a more fiery caller, and offseason signing Gizmy has taken over the system.

Håvard “rain” Nygaard has stepped away from in-game leading at 100 Thieves after just over six months at the helm, HLTV reports. The Norwegian veteran joined the organisation as the IGL of its new European project and has now returned to his old roles, with the team adding Jack “Gizmy” von Spreckelsen to the lineup in the offseason.

rain told HLTV the change followed a conversation with Lukas “gla1ve” partway through the season.

I had a discussion with Lukas [gla1ve] midway through the season where he kind of asked me, like, 'Is this what you really want to do?' And I said I would think about it. But then the ball starts rolling, and I'm like, 'I can go back to playing my own roles. I can do what I really enjoy doing.' So I'm very happy now, and I'm happy that I can add to the team in my old role.

Asked what he had been missing in his first season as captain, rain pointed to temperament rather than tactics.

I think it's just my personality maybe. They wanted a more fiery IGL. I'm very laid back and calm, so I'm not going to tell... If people do something wrong, I'm like, 'Ah, it's fine, bro. Don't worry about it.' So I think my personality is maybe a little bit too chill.

He drew a direct contrast with his replacement, saying Gizmy will tell a player immediately if they misthrow a grenade, and calling him “very straightforward and very hungry to win,” someone who “wants everything to be perfect, so he's a perfectionist, you could say.” rain added that the team has been running three- to four-hour theory sessions every day to absorb Gizmy's system, which he said suits all five players, while cautioning that the roster is not yet at its peak.

100 Thieves came through the Esports World Cup open qualifier by winning three back-to-back series. rain singled out the match against BC.Game as the closest call, saying he thought the series was gone during a clutch from Gizmy on Nuke before realising his teammate was the last man alive. BC.Game had taken Inferno, and rain said every map from that point was tight, with the final series of the qualifier proving the most comfortable.
