Pokémon Pokopia passes 5 million sales on Switch 2

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company say the Koei Tecmo-developed life sim has reached 21 percent of the console’s installed base in five months.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have confirmed that Pokémon Pokopia, the Switch 2 exclusive developed in partnership with Koei Tecmo, has sold more than 5 million copies since its release in March. Video Games Chronicle reported the figure on Thursday.

Measured against the 23.68 million Nintendo Switch 2 consoles sold to date, that puts the life sim in the hands of roughly 21 percent of the console’s owners after five months on sale.

Second only to Mario Kart World

The total makes Pokopia the second best-selling Switch 2 title. Mario Kart World leads on 15 million, though that game was bundled with the console at launch, while Donkey Kong Bananza sits behind Pokopia on 4.78 million.

It also places Pokopia among the best-selling Pokémon spin-offs released to date, and represents an unusually large hit for Koei Tecmo. The game was built mainly by the studio’s Omega Force team, led by the directors of the sandbox game Dragon Quest Builders 2.

Pokopia shipped as a Game Key Card, the physical format that carries a download code on the card rather than the game data itself. Players control a Ditto that has taken human form, befriending other Pokémon and using their abilities to rebuild an island.

More expansions still to come

A free update and a paid expansion have already been released for the game. A second expansion is due in late 2026, with a third and final expansion planned for 2027.

Video Games Chronicle’s own review called Pokopia “Pokémon’s best spin-off”, arguing that the late-game grind “can’t dull the shine” of the wider experience. The outlet described it as a life simulation that borrows from the established leaders of the genre and turns those parts into something aimed squarely at both Pokémon players and cozy-game players.

For Koei Tecmo the result is an outlier: Video Games Chronicle noted that a hit on this scale has few precedents in the developer’s history. Neither Nintendo nor The Pokémon Company said when the sales total would next be updated.
