Report claims Halo: Campaign Evolved had a troubled development

Halo insider Rebs Gaming says contractor Abstraction was pulled off the remake early and its work redone, with knock-on effects on a cancelled project.

Halo: Campaign Evolved went through a difficult development whose effects reached beyond the remake itself, according to a new report relayed by IGN. The account comes from Rebs Gaming, a Halo insider whose reporting journalists have corroborated in the past.

The report says the remake underwent major changes while it was being built. Halo Studios works with a large number of external teams and contractors, an arrangement the report points to as a possible source of the problems it describes. One of those partners, a studio called Abstraction, was recruited around 2023 to adapt the original game's work so that it would run on a new engine and support new features.

The technical hurdle was substantial. Halo Studios opted for Unreal Engine 5, while the original Halo was built on Blam, an engine the report characterises as ancient by comparison. Abstraction's job was to make the two fit together, and to make additions such as sprinting and four-player co-op feel organic inside levels and combat encounters that were never designed with them in mind. The original encounters did not account for those systems, and the report frames that mismatch as the kind of problem capable of causing wider issues if it is not handled carefully.

Contractor removed before the work was finished

Rebs Gaming reports that Abstraction was pulled off the remake prematurely, after Halo Studios set what the report describes as unrealistic deadlines and expectations for a technically complex project. The studio does not appear in Campaign Evolved's credits, although individual staff members were given special thanks.

A source told Rebs Gaming that Abstraction's work was then thrown out and redone quickly, which the report links to the bugs and artificial intelligence problems that surfaced in the finished game. The report also states that the development difficulties affected a multiplayer project that has since been cancelled.

The claims rest on insider sourcing rather than an official account from Halo Studios, and IGN presents them as a report rather than confirmed fact.
