Roblox blames a shortage of viral games for slowing player growth

Daily active users fell to 123 million in the second quarter and the platform declined to give full-year guidance.

Roblox told investors that a shortage of breakout hit experiences was one of the main reasons its player growth slowed during the second quarter, in results the platform published on July 31.

Daily active users fell to 123 million over the quarter, down from a peak of 152 million in the third quarter of 2025, according to figures reported by Dexerto. Bookings, the measure Roblox uses for player spending, grew 8% year over year after several quarters of far stronger growth. GamesIndustry.biz reported that second-quarter revenue rose 36% to $1.5 billion, with net bookings falling slightly short of expectations.

Roblox said weaker engagement was caused in part by a lack of viral games, with players spending more of their time in experiences that generate less revenue for the platform. The company also declined to issue full-year financial guidance, a signal of uncertainty over how the remainder of 2026 will unfold.

A year of falling share price

The results land after a sharp reversal in the market. Roblox shares have fallen roughly 70% over the previous 12 months, and Dexerto put the resulting loss of market value at around $70 billion.

Investment research firm Morningstar described the quarter as terrible, saying that nearly every significant engagement and spending metric had moved in the wrong direction. Analysts cited in the same reporting warned that Roblox may find long-term growth harder to sustain if it continues to depend on unpredictable viral hits to drive player activity.

The slowdown follows years of rapid expansion for the platform, and the second-quarter figures mark the point at which that growth curve visibly flattened on both of the measures Roblox reports to investors. Neither report describes a specific measure the company intends to take in response, and Roblox itself did not set out one alongside the results. With no full-year guidance on the table, the next scheduled read on whether engagement has stabilised is the company’s third-quarter report.
