Spider-Man 2 sells 316,000 more copies after Brand New Day

Alinea Analytics estimates Insomniac's 2023 game added $11 million in sales in under two weeks alongside the film's release.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has sold an estimated 316,000 additional copies since Spider-Man: Brand New Day reached cinemas, generating about $11 million across PlayStation 5 and Steam in less than two weeks, according to figures from Alinea Analytics reported by IGN and GameSpot.

The Insomniac Games title launched in 2023. Alinea's data puts its lifetime total at 18.2 million copies sold, 92% of them on PS5, for roughly $1.2 billion in sales revenue across the three years since release.

The numbers behind the spike

IGN reports that the game recorded 1 million daily active users over the past weekend, its first time at that level since launch week and roughly 2.6 times its pre-film daily engagement. GameSpot adds that a further 274,000 players started the game through the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog on the Extra and Premium tiers, and that 20% of the copies sold since the film opened were physical.

Alinea's head of market analysis Rhys Elliott attributed most of the movement to the film rather than to price cuts. GameSpot reports the game has been selling an estimated 15,000 copies a day on PS5 at $29.39, against roughly 6,300 a day during a February promotion, with sales on Steam also rising at a $40 price point.

An accident rather than a strategy

Elliott argued the lift was unplanned, noting that Brand New Day arrived almost three years after the game and that aligning a major film with a major game release remains impractical. He described syncing two multi-year, multi-hundred-million-dollar productions as a logistical nightmare given how unpredictable both development cycles are, while saying he would like to see a publisher that makes both attempt it.

The point has a near-term test attached. Sony and Insomniac are preparing to release Marvel's Wolverine in September, and IGN notes there is no corresponding Wolverine film scheduled alongside it.

Insomniac released an update timed to the film that added new suits to the game, including a costume drawn from Brand New Day, and a PSSR update for PS5 Pro owners. GameSpot reports the film took $145 million in US theatres over the August 7-9 weekend and has cleared $1.6 billion worldwide.
