Take-Two subpoenas Microsoft and Discord over GTA 6 gameplay leaks

The publisher wants the identity of whoever shared this week’s leaked clips, and has given Microsoft until September 4 to hand over account records.

Take-Two has subpoenaed Microsoft and Discord in an effort to identify the people behind this week's Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks, GameSpot reports. Clips said to come from the unreleased game have circulated online over the past several days, showing material ranging from combat to basketball, and the publisher is still working out how they got out.

One subpoena, filed in the Southern District of New York and first reported by Kotaku, seeks to “obtain the identity of an alleged infringer or infringers” involved in sharing Grand Theft Auto 6 content. The filing describes that content as copyrighted material, wording that points to the clips being a genuine leak rather than an elaborate hoax.

What the subpoena asks for

The request covers account IDs, email addresses, IP addresses, phone numbers and linked accounts including Xbox and Google profiles, along with information on Discord users communicating in specific servers. Microsoft has been given until September 4 to produce what it holds, a timeline GameSpot characterises as urgent.

That date falls a week after Rockstar's own planned presentation of the game and more than two months before release, which leaves the publisher chasing the source of the footage while its marketing campaign is already running.

The leaker, who goes by CyberLeek online, is believed to have access to a playable build of the game: one of the leaked clips shows the word “LEEK” spelled out in bullet holes on a wall. The same account was also advertising cryptocurrency alongside the footage.

Rockstar is due to air an “Extended Look” at Grand Theft Auto 6 on August 27, exclusively through Netflix, a presentation GameSpot expects to fill in concrete details after years of waiting and speculation. The game launches on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GameSpot says it has approached Rockstar for comment and had not received a response at the time of publication.
