A Deltarune-themed fan cafe in Toronto has ended in a public apology after attendees reported food poisoning, Dexerto reported. The event, run by fan event organizer Sugar Packet on August 9, had promised themed food, merchandise, local artists, cosplay servers, photo opportunities and interactive activities built around Toby Fox's episodic RPG.
Attendees instead described overcrowding, long delays and poor organization, and several later said they had become ill after eating there.
What the organizers said
In a statement posted to Instagram, Sugar Packet said the cafe "was a failure" and listed a series of problems: unexpected increases in food prices, overcrowding, poor crowd control, and the last-minute pushing back of reservations.
The more serious issue emerged afterwards, when the organizers received multiple reports of foodborne illness. They identified the takoyaki as the particular concern, explaining that the frozen product had been left to thaw inside an ice box rather than a refrigerator before being prepared and served, with bags removed from the cooler only as they were made up and swapped between shifts.
According to the statement, the takoyaki had only left the freezer that morning for the first batch and that afternoon for the second, and the organizers had understood that thawing in a fridge and serving within 24 hours was safe.
That is not the standard you are all looking for.
Refunds and a pause
Sugar Packet has offered refunds to everyone who bought a ticket, regardless of whether they reported becoming ill, and said it would hold off on further events for the time being.
Deltarune is the episodic follow-up to Toby Fox's Undertale, following Kris, Susie and Ralsei through a series of Dark Worlds. Its first chapter arrived in 2018, and its characters, soundtrack and offbeat humor have built a large online following since.
