Square Enix's first-quarter profit rose 175.5% to ¥13.2 billion ($82.9 million), lifted by the arrival of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox, GamesIndustry.biz reports. Net sales climbed 32.3% to ¥78.4 billion ($492.3 million) and operating income rose 88.6% to ¥17 billion ($106.7 million).
The gains came almost entirely from the Digital Entertainment segment, where net sales increased 51.8% to ¥49.9 billion ($313.3 million) and operating income rose 91.8% to ¥15.5 billion ($97.3 million). Within it, the HD Games sub-segment nearly doubled: net sales up 98.8% to ¥17.7 billion ($111.1 million) from ¥8.9 billion, and operating income up 510% to ¥6.1 billion ($38.2 million) from ¥1 billion.
Rebirth drove that swing. The game reached Switch 2, Xbox Series X and S and the Microsoft Store during the quarter, having originally launched on PlayStation 5 in February 2024 and Windows in January 2025. Square Enix also credited The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales and higher catalogue sales. Other releases in the quarter included Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 on Switch 2, Star Ocean: The Second Story A on Switch 2, and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster.
The MMO sub-segment grew more modestly, with net sales up 32.2% to ¥12.7 billion ($79.7 million) and operating income flat at ¥3.6 billion ($22.6 million). The company said those numbers reflected "improved user activity" after it announced a new Final Fantasy 14 expansion pack, and pointed to "the advance recognition of expenses related to its planned release in early 2027" — meaning costs for a product that will not generate revenue until the next fiscal year are already on the books.
Games for Smart Devices and PC Browser posted a 35.6% rise in net sales to ¥19.4 billion ($121.8 million), with operating income up 72.7% to ¥5.7 billion ($35.7 million), supported by Dissidia Duelum Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest Smash/Grow.
Unit sales reached 7.38 million in the quarter, up from 4.01 million a year earlier. Physical copies accounted for 0.73 million of that and downloads 6.65 million, a roughly nine-to-one digital split. Despite the beat, Square Enix left its consolidated full-year forecast unchanged from the guidance it issued on May 14, 2026.
