According to IGN, Subnautica 2 received its Buddy system update on August 19, which adds new features to the game's multiplayer mode. The update, version 1.2, includes Proximity Chat, Player Trading and Revives, and an all-new Tracking Tag.
Creative director Anthony Gallegos discussed the update in a video, saying it includes the game's first iteration of proximity chat, which allows players to communicate with each other locally using in-game voice chat. As players move farther away from each other, the voice chat switches to a radio-sounding voice that progressively breaks up, adding to the game's tension.
The update also adds player emotes, inventory sharing, and player revives. Players can use emotes to cheer on their friends, clap, or express frustration, and can share items with each other by accessing each other's inventory. If a player is downed, their friends can revive them by sharing oxygen.
